How to Maintain A Healthy Gut Diet

How to Maintain A Healthy Gut Diet

At the moment there has been a lot of talk about gut health and how to maintain a healthy gut diet.  But what is the big deal about our gut health?  What are the best foods for digestive health?  There is a lot of bacteria in your stomach so you may be surprised to find out it is a really big deal.  Our gut plays a vital role in our overall well being, everything from how quickly our body digests certain foods, to help control our moods.  The human body is amazing and the gut and how it talks to our brain confirms just how amazing our bodies are.

Several leading doctors have started to link gut bacteria to many different things such as cancers, diabetes, heart disease and depression, just to name a few. Our gut bacteria and how healthy it comes down to what we are putting in our bodies.  The gut is so important because it digests your food, regulates your hormones, gets rid of the toxins from your body and helps you when you are sick.  Now you can see that is a pretty important job!   In order to keep our gut health in excellent shape, we need to watch what we are eating with a good mixture of fibre, protein and good fats.

Did you know that the gut produces more than 90% of the serotonin in our bodies?  That means that it has a huge impact on our moods and how we are feeling.   Having a healthy gut and having a healthy immune system is making your body produce the good types of bacteria and tells your body that it can now feel good again. There have also been some new studies that are showing that bad gut health can also affect your memory and how you think.

So what is the best diet for gut health?

Try and consume more omega 3 fats instead of consuming more omega 6 fats.

Foods such as coconut oil, avocados, fish that has high levels of omega 3 are great.  Using oils such as extra virgin olive oil are helping with inflammation, weight loss. These all make sure that the gut bugs are staying healthier.

Try to keep your vegetable intake up.

If you can create a routine where vegetables are a big part of your diet at lunch and dinner for the week then you are a step in the right direction.

Add some more fibre rich foods like nuts and seeds into your diet.

It is as simple as making this a morning or afternoon snack.  I find a good handful of nuts and/or seeds keeps me going in the afternoon until dinner time.  These are some of the best foods for gut health.

Slow down on the hand sanitizers and antibacterial wipes.

It has become common to wipe our children and sterilise them after everything they touch and eat.  Research is starting to show that this really may not be as beneficial than we think, plus the fact that antibacterial soaps may be more harmful than regular soap.  Bottles are sterilised in the hospital, we are controlling our kids shoving dirt and anything else into their mouths. This is all affecting their bodies being able to produce these beneficial bacterias that our bodies need.  You can read more on the importance of this here.

Try to cut back on your intake of sugar and artificial sweeteners.

These sugars can really upset the balance of your gut .  A higher blood sugar level means that the wrong types of bacteria are being made.

There are benefits to taking probiotics.

Probiotics can come in a wide variety such as tablet, powder or in certain foods.  Taking these can help improve your digestion and immunity.  Yogurt has also been found to help with diarrhea as well. It is always best to check with a professional about what probiotics might suit you.  You can also see her some more information from Australia Nature Care.
